Google Alerts for small business

Google Alerts is probably one of my favourite Google tools for small businesses. Before I tell how to set up a Google Alert, let me explain briefly why I think it's such a great tool, and hopefully once you've set up your account and have started using it, all will become clear.

Why Google Alerts are so good:

- Stuck for interesting things to tweet about? Create a Google Alert for a term associated with the field you'd like to be known in. If you sell specialist antique books for instance, you might like to be known as an expert in that field, and sharing information via Twitter may be a great way for you to achieve this.

- Want to monitor your/your businesses presence on the net? Just use your name as a search term. Sorry, if your name is Sarah Smith this might not work so well for you, but if you're an IT consultant in Sydney, the term 'Sarah Smith IT consultant Sydney' might just work. Give it a go. You could also enter the name of your business as a search term.

- Want to keep up-to-date with what’s happening in your industry? Want to know what your competition is up to? Again, creating Google Alerts with the relevant search terms will ensure you're in the know.

To create a Google Alters account, just go to http://www.google.com/alerts. Once you've chosen the relevant topics and search terms, you can then control whether you want to receive alerts covering blogs, web, videos etc. You can also chose how often you want to be alerted, how many results you’d like per alert and how you’d like it delivered to you. All of this should take you no more than 10 minutes at the most.

How do you use Google Alerts? What's your experience been?
